Looking Back at 2012

Last year I did a list-style update that I thought was a nice way to recap the year. I’m repeating it this year, starting off again with some random statistics:

  • Bouts Officiated: 19
  • Zipcar Rentals: 27
  • Foursquare Badges Unlocked or Leveled Up: 30
  • Dailymile Workouts: 143
  • Jars canned: 104
  • Miles on the bike: 97.97

Overall it was a good year, but the theme was “life is expensive.” There was the crazy high electric bills at my old apartment, I moved again, there were problems with my student loan payments, some trips that I didn’t plan for at the start of the year, and I bought a new setup for working at home sooner than I’d planned. I just kept reminding myself that this is why I have a savings account. I somehow managed not to touch my emergency fund, though the student loan payment problems made me start thinking about it.

I’m also still trying to adjust to the higher rent at my new apartment – the student loan payment problems threw me for a loop at the end of the year, and I won’t really know what my 2013 take home pay looks like for a few more weeks. Everything is – and will be – fine. I wasn’t eating ramen for weeks on end nor did I have to turn down invitations just to save a few bucks, and I was grateful for that. Had any of this happened to me a few years ago, I wouldn’t have been able to absorb the costs. Hopefully 2013 will be a bit more predictable, financially.

January: Rang the year in with Paul & Danielle, as always. Began working from home on a regular basis. Started trying to get my landlord to listen to me about the problems with the electric that were inflating my BG&E bill. ALA Midwinter in Dallas. Decided I wasn’t renewing the lease at that apartment.

February: Saw TMBG! Always a good show. Moved into a shared office at work.

March: Let’s not talk about that food poisoning/flu/horrible illness, shall we? My cousin got married on a beautiful early spring day in Central Mass.

April: Back in MA to say goodbye to KLD. Birthday brunch for 12.5 at Woodberry Kitchen! Went to Philly for my Great Aunt & Uncle’s 50th anniversary party. Was informed that BG&E was going to refund me a lot of cash money.

May: Ocean City, MD for the Maryland Library Association conference. Got a bike! Went to Seattle for the MLA Annual Meeting and also vacation: planning, eating, fun times, photos.

June: Went apartment shopping yet again, but brought help this time. ALA Annual in Anaheim.

July: A heat wave fried my brain. Went home for a family party and drove all over Eastern Mass visiting people. Took on a bit more responsibility in roller derby. Canning Party: Pickles Edition with Andrea.

August: APA Convention in Orlando. Got an IUD. Moved, yet again.

September: Hello, carpal tunnel! Girls’ weekend in Dewey Beach, DE.

October: Saw Regina Spektor in concert – enjoyed the music, but not a great live show. Kate & Dave got married! Mom, Dad and Aunt Mary visited briefly. Rode around town with Baltimore Bike Party. Halloween partied x2. Canning Party: Fall Fruit Edition with Andrea. Back in prescription glasses.

November: Went to a third Halloween party. Helped put together a baby shower. Decided my roller derby career is drawing to a close. Canning Party: Beginner Canning with Catherine. Enjoyed Thanksgiving with the Smedmans.

December: Lots of holiday-related parties and other festivities. Welcomed (so far only virtually) Abigail to the world. Months later, finally got that (big!) refund from BG&E! Traveled home for Christmas and rang in 2013 with Paul and Danielle.
